The average head circumference is between 54 and 57 centimeters – most wigs can be additionally adjusted using small straps inside.

The wig cap is the base for a clean, natural fit. It smoothes your natural hair, absorbs moisture, and ensures that the wig does not rub directly against the scalp. Pull the wig cap over your head like a hat, from the forehead backward. Make sure that the front edge is about a centimeter above your natural hairline so that no net remains visible later. Pin back any individual stray strands with flat hairpins. Wig caps are available in different shades – choose a tone that is close to your scalp or hair color.

Putting on a wig without a hairnet

Not everyone needs a wig cap. If you have a very sensitive scalp, suffer from heat buildup, or have no natural hair left at all, you can also put the wig on directly. In this case, a skin-friendly cotton headband or a special non-slip band is a good alternative that provides additional hold. For a bald scalp, a light grip effect is also recommended: wigs with an inner band made of velour or silicone sit reliably even without a net. Clean the scalp thoroughly beforehand so that oil and residue do not reduce the hold.

Once your natural hair is prepared and the wig cap is in place, the actual putting on follows. Take your time, especially at the beginning, and it is best to work in front of a mirror. With this sequence, your wig will sit naturally and firmly:

• Shake out the wig: Shake the wig lightly so that the hair falls loosely and takes on its shape.

• Put it on from front to back: Hold the wig by the sides, place the front edge at your natural hairline first, and then pull the wig over your head toward the back.

• Align the hairline: Position the front edge about four fingers' width above your eyebrows – this creates a natural distance. [1]

• Check the fit: Adjust the wig so that your earlobes are free and the neck area lies flat.

• Adjust the straps: Pull the small straps on the inside until the wig sits firmly but without pressure.

• Style the hair: Comb or fluff the hair carefully into shape – for synthetic hair, it is best to use a coarse brush or your fingers.

Long natural hair is the biggest challenge when putting on a wig because it must disappear completely and flatly under the wig. Divide your hair into two sections and braid each into a flat plait along the head – similar to a French braid. Lay the ends of the braids crossed over each other at the nape of the neck and secure them with curved hairpins. Then pull the wig cap over them to smooth out the structure. This prevents your natural hair from building up under the wig and causing it to lift unnaturally. Those with very thick hair can additionally use a flat nylon cap, which reliably compresses the volume.

Special wig clips that snap onto your natural hair also offer a firm hold and can be removed without leaving any residue. For sensitive or bald scalps, velour grip bands are also recommended. With a lace front wig, the wafer-thin, hand-knotted lace base ensures a deceptively real hairline. To keep this area lying flat, it is often glued or taped. Use only skin-friendly wig adhesive or double-sided toupee tape that is approved for contact with the skin. Apply the adhesive in a thin line along the cleaned hairline, let it dry for a moment, and then gently press the lace into place. As a general rule, always test new adhesive products on a small, inconspicuous area of skin first to detect irritation early.

After chemotherapy, the scalp is often particularly sensitive, and the wig should be put on as gently as possible.
